More About Firearms & the National Firearms Act

The National Firearms Act (NFA) is a federal law established in 1934 as part of the IRS (Internal Revenue Services) code. It became the first federal law to regulate the manufacture, sale, and transfer of firearms. It imposes a tax along with registration requirements on certain categories of guns and their equipment, such as machine guns, short-barreled shotguns/rifles, and silencers. The Act also includes a category for other weapons that involve certain handguns. However, most handguns do not fall under NFA regulations.

Since its passage, other gun laws have been enacted related to weapons and gun ownership, including:

  • The Federal Firearms Act of 1938
  • The Gun Control Act of 1968
  • The Firearms Owners’ Protection Act of 1986
  • The Brady Act of 1983
  • The Federal Assault Weapons Ban
  • The National Instant Criminal Background Check System Improvement Amendments Act of 2007
  • The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022

Attorney Ronnie Yeates understands the regulations and implications of these laws as they pertain to firearms and your right to buy, sell, transfer, or own them.

Due to his extensive understanding, training, and experience with firearms, Ronnie can provide detailed knowledge in firearms matters pertaining to any criminal arrests or charges you may face, from the simple to the complex. This intensive knowledge sets him apart from most other criminal defense lawyers, many of whom may know little about or have never handled various types of firearms. His understanding of federal firearm regulations is extensive, which can be put to your advantage when facing gun charges.
